12/15/2015—2015 North Carolina Wing Conference
Members of North Carolina Wing had fun, learned new things, celebrated our founding members and laughed as they enjoyed themselves at this years annual conference.
11/03/2015—Making the CAP Difference for Life
Major Joshua S. Cunningham was a guest speaker Tuesday, November 3rd, at the Sugar Valley Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol (CAP). Major Cunningham serves as the Director of Cadet Programs for the South Carolina Wing and as the Squadron Commander for Emerald City Cadet Squadron in Greenwood, South Carolina.
11/01/2015—Ranger Training Weekend a Huge Success
The 6th Annual NCWG Ranger Training Weekend (“RTW”) was held on 30 Oct – 1 Nov, 2015 at Morrow Mountain State Park in Albemarle, NC. The 230 RTW participants hailed from North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Florida, Georgia and other wings.
11/01/2015—Tar River Composite Squadron Assists at EAA Young Eagles Event in Wilson
Tar River Composite Squadron was honored to be invited to assist at the Young Eagles event organized by Chapter 1047 of the Experimental Aircraft Association at the Wilson Industrial Airport (W03) on 31 October 2015.
10/18/2015—2015 Burlington Airman/NCO School
Burlington Composite Squadron hosted an Airman school for all new cadets to learn beginning skills for their CAP Careers and an NCO School for new sergeants to learn introductory leadership skills that will help them as they progress through the ranks.
10/13/2015—Marines VMAQT-1 “Banshees” Squadron Tour
Cunningham Field Composite Squadron took a break from their normal squadron meeting and took a tour of Marine Tactical Electronic Warfare Training Squadron One (VMAQT-1) - more commonly known as the “Banshees.”

The Cunningham Composite Squadron, NC160, MCAS Cherry Point, NC, held an Emergency Services Aircrew Ground School from Saturday to Sunday, October 10th through the 11th. with six members participating.
10/10/2015—Enhanced technology improves Civil Air Patrol’s flood damage assessment imagery
Civil Air Patrol airmen photographing the flood damage in South Carolina began using a new tool Thursday in their emergency response arsenal – a Garmin Virb camera system that attaches to their planes’ wing strut. The cameras capture ground images directly below, which allows officials to make much faster use of the images.

Civil Air Patrol’s North Carolina Wing has three aircraft and aircrews actively assisting in the aerial assessment of the flooding down in South Carolina. A total of 10 members from the North Carolina Wing are actively supporting the mission.

The Asheville Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol held a change of command ceremony on Thursday, October 1, welcoming new squadron commander Lt Col Harald (Harry) Fiedler.
09/28/2015—NC Wing Cadets Shine at the 2015 Middle East Region Cadet Competition
The Civil Air Patrol Middle East Region hosted the cadet competition on September 25-27, 2015 at Ft. Pickett in Blackstone, VA. Congratulations to "North Carolina One" the Raleigh-Wake (MER-NC-048) and to “North Carolina Two” the Fayetteville Composite Squadron (MER-NC-007). Congratulations also go out to "Virginia Two" the Coastal Squadron of the Virginia Wing (MER-VA-095) for advancing to the NCC in December 2015.
09/24/2015—Halifax Composite Squadron air crew located missing woman
On September 23 an aircrew from the Halifax Composite Squadron on a training sortie located a vehicle underside down in the power line right of way adjacent to NC Hwy 46 in Northampton county near Gaston, NC. The find was reported and the aircrew directed emergency personnel to the scene.
09/23/2015—NC137 receives Aerospace Education Excellence Award in 2015.
Captain Gene Merklein, Aerospace Education Officer (AEO) presented the Aerospace Education Excellence Award (2014-2015) to Major Jeff Focke, Commander of the South Piedmont Senior Squadron NC137 on 23rd Sept 2015, at the Veterans of Foreign Wars building.

Ten NC units shine in the Middle East Region. Congratulations to the following units in NC Wing on being named a Quality Cadet Unit for 2014-2015.
09/20/2015—Civil Air Patrol Assists with Winston-Salem Airshow
Cadets and Senior Members from the North Carolina Wing of Civil Air Patrol came out in droves 18 September – 20 September 2015 to support the annual Winston-Salem Airshow.
09/13/2015—SLS Charlotte
On Sept 11-12th, NC-137 successfully hosted a Leadership School in Charlotte, NC. Maj. Jeff Focke was the course director and was able to gather an excellent array of talented instructors.
09/05/2015—Statesville Points of Distribution Training
When communities are without power, water and other infrastructure needs, the Civil Air Patrol works with agencies to establish Points of Distribution (PODs) to disburse essential items, like water, food, ice and tarps, to residents until their basic needs are restored. Across North Carolina, CAP volunteers train to serve in PODs to assist agencies in times of disaster.

Amateur Astronomer Steve Esparza gave an astronomy talk to the Sugar Valley Composite Squadron on September 1, during theSquadron's Tuesday night meeting at the Sugar Valley Airport. Using the internet, cameras and telescopes, Mr. Esparza captured the attention of senior members, cadets and visitors alike.
08/31/2015—NC Wing CAP conducts successful Professional Development Weekend
The North Carolina Wing Civil Air Patrol concluded a successful weekend of training and professional development at headquarters in Burlington, NC on August 30, 2015. The weekend consisted of the Squadron Leadership Schools (SLS) and the Corporate Learning Course (CLC), both of which would help members advance in their CAP careers.
08/28/2015—Civil Air Patrol joins Total Force ‘Airmen’
Following 74 years of support to emergency services, aerospace education and cadet programs, the Civil Air Patrol, when conducting missions for the Air Force as the official Air Force Auxiliary is now included in the Air Force’s definition of the Total Force.
08/22/2015—Gastonia Squadron Inaugural Bivouac
The Gastonia Composite Squadron conducted an inaugural bivouac at its annex location, “Camp Semper Sursum” in Gastonia. The purpose of the 24 hour event was to teach SAR skills to cadets in a practical and relaxed setting.
08/19/2015—Cunningham Field Composite Squadron celebrates National Aviation Day
On August 19, 2015, it was only fitting for history to be made at the birthplace of powered flight: the Wright Brothers Memorial located in Kill Devil Hills, NC. C/AB Bailey Taylor, a cadet who joined Cunningham Field Composite Squadron the beginning of August, had the honor of taking her first powered flight at National Aviation Day 2015.

Governor Pat McCrory flew in to Shelby, NC Tuesday, Aug 11 in the Governor's King Air and made it a point to come visit Shelby Squadron while in route to other business.
08/08/2015—Asheville Squadron solos two cadets in one week
For the past eight years, the Asheville Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol has organized a flight academy for any of their cadets who wish to pursue the dream of solo flight. During that span, 25 cadets have finished the course and successfully completed a number of takeoffs and landings without the luxury of an experienced instructor beside them.

The cadet XO of Shelby Squadron took to the skies recently in hot pursuit of a Private Pilot License at the grand old age of 17.
07/30/2015—Cadet Officer School
From July 19th through July 30th I attended Cadet Officer School at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Alabama. In the two weeks of being there I learned invaluable skills, was intellectually and physically challenged, and made many friends.

Tar River Composite Squadron assisted at the inaugural Light up the Runway Glow Run, which included a 1 mile fun run and 5K race at the Rocky Mount - Wilson Regional Airport held on 18 July 2015.

Civil Air Patrol North Carolina Wing’s Apex Cadet Squadron held a change of command ceremony on July 9, 2015. The evening was presided over by Capt. Michael Willis and attended by many supportive family and friends. C/Maj. James Barrow accepted command from C/1st Lt. Jack Torborg.
07/06/2015—Brunswick County Composite Squadron SM Credits CAP for his Career in Aviation
SM Bill Meadows joined the CAP as a cadet in 1950 at age 13 and credits the training he received with his success in aviation and business, and with his introduction to ballooning in 1969.
07/06/2015—Brunswick County Composite Squadron Receives Third BEMC Grant
A $1,000 Community Grant from Brunswick Electric Membership Corporation to NC-170 for calendar 2015 will help pay for a trailer to store and transport the squadron's POD Kit to training/exercise sites in North Carolina.

Independence Day has traditionally been Military Appreciation Day at Carowinds Theme Park, in Charlotte NC. The Iredell Composite SAR Devil Squadron Color guard was on hand this year for the Presentation of Colors during the opening ceremony.

Group IV recently held a very successful Training Leaders of Cadets (TLC) Course. It was held on June 27-28 at the Winston-Salem Composite Squadron Headquarters Building. There were a total of 13 students representing 9 different CAP units.

06/23/2015—CAP Cadets Take Part in Air Race Tradition
Hickory, NC played host to a leg of the 2015 Air Race Classic. The Race is also called the "All Women's Cross Country Air Race," and can trace it's origins back to the 1929 Women's Air Derby. The Derby was put on by a group called the "Ninety Nines" and was founded by Female Air Pioneer Amelia Earhart.

On Saturday, June 20, a total of 26 members of the Brunswick County (NC-170) and Cape Fear (NC-023) Composite Squadrons conducted a practice ground and air search for a missing airplane in the Boiling Spring Lakes area of Brunswick County.

The Civil Air Patrol’s Orange County Composite Squadron (OCCS) was activated at 6:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 30, 2015 to perform a practice urban detection finding exercise (UDF) in Hillsborough, NC.

05/09/2015—Cadet Adam Riddell Obtains Private Pilot License
Cadet 1st Lt. Adam Riddell of the Civil Air Patrol’s Burlington Composite Squadron, has passed the test and received his wings. Cadet Riddell became the NC Wing's newest private pilot on Saturday, May 9, after passing his private pilot check-ride with flying colors.

05/02/2015—Gastonia Squadron Open House
A bright morning sky saw the arrival in Gastonia of CAP aircraft with pilots Major John May from the Charlotte Senior Squadron and and Lt. Col. Harry Fiedler from the Asheville Composite Squadron. Cadets began to arrive at 0700 to set up a recruiting station, communications display and a flight simulator.
04/30/2015—Spaatz and Mitchell Presentations at Apex Cadet Squadron
This past Thursday night at Resurrection Lutheran Church in Cary, NC saw the capstone of one cadet's career and the beginning of another as a cadet officer. Presiding over the event was the commander of the 440th Airlift Wing at Pope Army Air Field, Brigadier General James Scanlan. It was truly a great honor to have an active duty Air Force general present at this event.

04/18/2015—CAP conducts statewide hurricane exercise
The North Carolina Wing, Civil Air Patrol, conducted a search and rescue exercise (SAREX) performing several missions in response to tasking as would be requested by federal, state and local emergency management agencies in the aftermath of a simulated hurricane.

Senior Members of the Orange County Composite Squadron toured the Orange County Emergency Services’ (ES) Communications Center in Hillsborough, NC on April 16, 2015. The tour was led by Sgt Ian Fowler, the Communications Training Officer for Orange County Emergency Services.

The Brunswick County Composite Squadron, NC-170, hosted the Cape Fear Composite Squadron, NC-023, for a rocketry event on 28 March at the Brunswick Forest field in Leland, NC.
03/27/2015—Hickory Composite Squadron Safety Officer draws on police career in Civil Air Patrol
Major Mauro J. Capobianco came to the Civil Air Patrol in 2008 with 27 years of experience with the US Coast Guard Auxiliary. If asked he'll tell you that he joined CAP primarily for the Cadet Program, to which he brought his then 12 year old grandson, Charlie. This afforded him a unique opportunity to spend time with his grandson.
03/22/2015—2015 NCWG Drill and Ceremonies
What brings these cadets to Goldsboro Composite Squadron at Seymour Johnson AFB is a weekend of training in Drill and Ceremonies, this being the second annual such event. The training is hard - many new and advanced concepts, movements, customs and courtesies will are presented, practiced and perfected. But as important as these are, they also come to meet fellow cadets, new and old, converse with their peers, but at the core is building bonds of friendships and mutual respect that will survive the tests of time.
03/19/2015—Tar River Squadron hosts CAP Congressional Gold Medal recipient, Casimir A. “Kaz” Barcynski.
The Tar River Composite Squadron enjoyed a presentation by Casimir A. “Kaz” Barcynski on March 19, 2015 at the Rocky Mount - Wilson Regional Airport. Barcynski is one of the Civil Air Patrol volunteers that served in CAP during World War II who was honored with the Congressional Gold Medal on Capitol Hill in December 2014.
03/19/2015—Orange County Squadron Holds Man-Tracking Course
The Orange County Composite Squadron held a nighttime man-tracking class on March 19, 2015. The tracking class was taught by NC State Park Ranger Jack Singley. Ranger Singley is the Park Ranger for the Eno River State Park in Durham, NC and is an experienced tracker of both people and animals.
03/07/2015—Brunswick County Composite Squadron conducts Flight Line Marshaling training
A total of fourteen NC-170 cadets and senior members participated in flight line marshaling training on March 7 at the the Cape Fear Regional Jetport. Since the squadron does not have a CAP qualified FLM instructor, Major Anthony "Tony" Overman, commander of the Goldsboro, NC squadron, NC-126, and a certified FLM instructor, drove to Oak Island to teach the class.

03/05/2015—Tar River Composite Squadron enjoys presentation by NASA JPL Solar System Ambassador, Marc Fusco.
The Tar River Composite Squadron enjoyed a presentation by Marc Fusco, NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory Solar System Ambassador on March 5, 2015 at the Rocky Mount Wilson Regional Airport. The presentation was titled “NASA’s Next Giant Leap – Human Spaceflight in the 21st Century”.
02/24/2015—Community leader illuminates Core Values at Sugar Valley
Sugar Valley Composite Squadron, on February 24, 2015, began a monthly program of presentations by members of our local community who are leaders outside of Civil Air Patrol. Our first speaker was Daniel Lobb, Vice President and COO of TRP Enterprises of Winston-Salem, NC. Daniel was a business partner of the late Thomas White, who was the character development officer for the squadron based at Sugar Valley Airport and a driving force in creating the squadron. Daniel noted that Thomas’s influence was evident in the fine people Daniel met.
02/17/2015—Raleigh-Wake Cadets Support State Emergency Operations Center
Three Civil Air Patrol cadets and two senior members from the Raleigh-Wake Composite Squadron responded to the call for support from the North Carolina Emergency Operations Center (EOC) early on the morning of Tuesday, February 17, 2105, to support North Carolina’s emergency responders following the severe winter storm that brought ice and snow to a large portion of the state
02/12/2015—C/Col John Robertson Appointed to the US Air Force Academy
I cannot stress enough that these lessons I learned in CAP were only a few of the lessons I had to learn in order to earn my appointment. My CAP career alone could never have gotten me there. To earn an Academy appointment, one must also make great grades in high school and stay active in organized sports on top of demonstrating potential for leadership. It was CAP that gave me the motivation I needed to excel in everything else.
02/08/2015—I survived Winter Ranger School!
The NCWG Winter Ranger School (“WRS”) was held on Feb. 6-8, 2015 at Morrow Mountain State Park in Albemarle, NC. WRS taught cadets and Senior Members many useful search and rescue skills. We learned how to hike for miles with full packs, to read maps by headlamp, to use compasses and how to function outdoors safely so we can locate and rescue others when needed
02/08/2015—Gastonia Squadron – Experiences of a Cadet at Ranger Training
The NC Wing Ranger Training Weekend was held February 6th - 8th at Morrow Mountain State Park. Ranger Training Weekend is a chance for cadets to begin or advance their training for search and rescue operations and to obtain a grade of ranger certification. Ranger certification is recognized nationally throughout Civil Air Patrol. The Gastonia Composite Squadron had two cadets attend this training event.
02/07/2015—North Carolina Wing Civil Air Patrol Honors Local Congressional Gold Medal Recipients
On February 7, 2015, the North Carolina Wing Civil Air Patrol recognized two of Civil Air Patrol’s founding members; Lt Col Clive Goodwin, and 2nd Lt Annie Stevenson Hyde as recipients of the Congressional Gold Medal. The presentation ceremony took place at Total Flight Solutions located at the Triangle North Executive Airport near Louisburg, NC. Over forty people including family, friends and Civil Air Patrol members gathered at the venue where the Franklin County Composite Squadron meets, to participate in the ceremony honoring the recipients
02/05/2015—Orange County Comp Squadron Holds Change-in-Command Ceremony
The Orange County Composite Squadron conducted a Change-in-Command ceremony on February 5, 2015. Current squadron Commander, Capt Peter Wehr, stepped down from his four year position of leading the squadron and Lt Ronald Watkins stepped up to the plate to accept his place as the new squadron Commander.
02/01/2015—North Carolina Wing Civil Air Patrol to Honor Local Congressional Gold Medal Recipients
A Congressional Gold Medal ceremony for Civil Air Patrol Founding Members Lt. Col. Goodwin, Jr. and Mrs. (2nd Lt) Annie Stevenson Hyde will take place on Saturday, February 7, 2015, at 1 p.m. at Total Flight Solutions located at the Triangle North Executive Airport near Louisburg, NC. Lt. Col Goodwin, Jr. and Mrs. Hyde will be receiving a bronze replica of the medal.
01/31/2015—Gastonia Squadron in the Air and on the Ground
The light of a new day shines across the tarmac at Gastonia Municipal Airport as five cadets of the Gastonia Composite Squadron await the arrival of a CAP Cessna 182, based at the Concord Senior Squadron, with Lt. Gary Moore at the controls to take them on their first Orientation Flight.

Civil Air Patrol North Carolina Wing’s Apex Cadet Squadron held their annual awards ceremony and also recognized the cadet promotes for the month.
01/30/2015—Civil Air Patrol, Cape Fear Squadron NC-023’s CyberPatriot Team Wins Region/Category 1st Place Gold Tier Award.
A team of Civil Air Patrol Cadets from the Cape Fear Squadron in Wilmington, North Carolina recently concluded an exceptional round of competition in the seventh season of CyberPatriot – the National Youth Cyber Defense Competition.

Fourteen senior members and four cadets of NC-170 participated in the statewide SAREX on January 17, 2015.
01/27/2015—Civil Air Patrol Cadets earn Mitchell and Earhart Awards
Four Raleigh Wake Composite Squadron cadets received prestigious awards on January 27, 2015. C/2nd Lt Sam Smith, C/2nd Lt Josh Thompson, and C/2nd Lt Hannah Fletcher, each received the Billy Mitchell Award and C/Capt. Holden Browning, received the Amelia Earhart award. The awards were presented by Col. David Crawford, North Carolina Wing Commander.
01/25/2015—Gastonia Composite Squadron's Monthly Trip turns into SAREX weekend of training
Cadets and Senior members of the Gastonia Composite Squadron plan a monthly day hike to a local mountain and practice survival tactics . The NC state-wide SAREX exercises the weekend of January 17 – 18 presented an opportunity to change direction and get some real world training.
01/21/2015—NC-170 Brunswick County Composite Squadron continues External AE Program.
The Brunswick County Composite Squadron has been active in bringing aerospace education to students in the Community In Schools program this past summer and has continued this effort with a recent visit on 15 January to the Jessie Mae Monroe Elementary School in Ash, NC.

01/19/2015—North Carolina Wing Civil Air Patrol Concludes SAREX Training Mission
The North Carolina Wing Civil Air Patrol has concluded a two day training mission that began on Friday January 16, 2015. The scenario theme was a simulated large earthquake which resulted in major damage statewide. CAP was tasked with conducting aerial surveys of the damage with high resolution digital photography as well as conducting ground searches for several persons that had become confused with the earthquake and fled the senior citizen communities they resided in, into the woods.

The Orange County Composite Squadron participated in the Civil Air Patrol’s SAREX Mission on January 17, 2015. Cadets from the squadron dispatched as part of Ground Team 9 with cadets from the Raleigh-Wake squadron.

The Asheville Composite Squadron conducted a Mountain Fury flying clinic during the weekend of January 9-11, 2015. This mission was conducted as Mission 15-T-5128 for the Maryland Wing.
01/13/2015—The 111th Search and Rescue Composite Squadron Puts Teamwork into Action
Cadets and senior members from the 111th Search and Rescue Composite Squadron were planning on spending the weekend snow tubing in West Virginia, but Mother Nature had other plans. Due to weather conditions, the trip was rescheduled for February with less than 24 hours’ notice. Rather than let a plan free weekend go to waste, snow tubing was replaced by a squadron work day followed by an evening of pizza and laser tag for members and their families.

01/11/2015—NC Wing Civil Air Patrol Presents Congressional Gold Medals
On January 7, 2015, the Civil Air Patrol recognized four of Civil Air Patrol’s World War II founding members as recipients of the Congressional Gold Medal. The presentation ceremony took place at the North Carolina Leadership Academy (NCLA) in Kernersville, NC. The event opened with the presentation of the Colors and the singing of the National Anthem by the NCLA’s Civil Air Patrol cadets. Lt Col Shelley Gonzales, the NCLA Cadet Squadron Commander, welcomed everyone to the historic event.

On 26 Dec 14, three members of the Sugar Valley Composite Squadron, MER-NC-052, North Carolina Wing, along with one from the Virginia Wing, took off for an eight-day adventure in Alaska. They attended the Alaska Wing Emergency Services & Snow Extravaganza (ESSE).
